Our Masses

Holydays of Obligation

There are hymns at the 9.30am and 8pm Masses. We also have a Mass at 4.15pm which is attended by many families, children and young people at secondary school.

Latin Masses

We regularly have have Masses in Latin, in the traditional Roman rite.

Fr Finigan will always try to meet requests for Latin Masses for particular occasions. He will always be happy to celebrate weddings and funerals in the older form of the rite whenever requested.

The different Masses in the parish

Every Mass is the celebration of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We listen to the Word of God, bread and wine are brought to the altar and the eucharist is offered in which the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, the sacrifice of calvary is made present and we are invited to share in the sacred banquet in which Christ is received.

Although many elements of the rite are common to all Masses, there are some variations in the celebration. Our Masses are celebrated as follows:

6pm Saturday

Hymns are sung at this Mass which is celebrated as the "first Mass of Sunday". Coming to this Mass fulfils our obligation to come to Mass on Sunday. The Mass is celebrated in English, in the newer form of the Roman rite, with the priest facing the people.

9am Sunday

The Mass is celebrated in English, in the newer form of the Roman rite, with the priest facing the people. Although children (and babies) are welcome at all Masses, this Mass is often celebrated in a way particularly suited to children. (More information.) Hymns are sung at this Mass and some of the parts of the Mass are sung. There is an informal children's choir which meets before and after Mass to practice.

10.30am Sunday

This is our most solemnly celebrated Mass of Sunday. The Mass is celebrated in Latin, facing Eastward, and the parts of the Mass are sung. The Mass is celebrated as far as possible to be a Missa Cantata in the older form, with incense, candles and the processional cross adding greater visible solemnity to the celebration of Mass.

6pm Sunday

This is a quieter celebration without music. The Mass is celebrated in English, in the newer form of the Roman rite, with the priest facing Eastwards. Some of our teenagers prefer to come to this quiet Mass.

10am Monday to Friday

We say the Angelus before Mass and then there is a quiet meditative celebration of the weekday Mass. If the day is a Feast or a Solemnity, there are hymns and other elements which highlight the celebration.

10.30am Saturday

This Mass is celebrated at the Lady Altar. The Mass is usually a Low Mass in Latin, in the older form of the Roman Rite. At the end of Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for an hour of silent adoration, during which confessions are heard. The Holy Hour concludes with Benediction.

Once a month, usually on the first Saturday, the Mass is celebrated as a Missa Cantata, with greater solemnity. As this makes the Mass longer, confessions are heard during Mass from 11-12 and there is a short service of Benediction after the Mass.

Every Saturday after Benediction, we go to the Lady chapel to sing the seasonal Marian anthem.
